The Cheshire Disabled Cricket Club was set up in 2000 through Cheshire Cricket Development at the request of the Cheshire Clubs' Cricket Committee to promote the game for people with disabilities. Since then it has gone from strength to strength. There has been a solid core of members with one or two changes from time to time and new members joining. The dedication of the club towards improvement together with winter nets before and after Christmas has seen the side develop into a well organised unit.
The Club has developed a strong tradition of bringing on young disabled cricketers. This has proved to be a very successful approach. Two of our young cricketers have developed their game to achieve National and mainstream County standing.
The 2005 season saw the Cheshire squad reaching the County finals for the first time. This was followed by Mark O'Brian and Ronnie Abbot being selected for the England tour to South Africa. Ronnie went as vice-captain of the team and won the man of the match award against Australia.
In 2007 the option of playing hardball or incrediball cricket was introduced with separate leagues for each. Cheshire opted for hardball and were runners up in the Northern Hardball League. Very little hardball cricket was played due an exceptionally wet summer but the incrediball team won through to the National Finals, and won the first major trophy for the club. This success was followed in 2008 with the second major trophy when the hardball team won the County Championship. By now the softball team was established as a development side combining young and new players with some of the seasoned older players.
2009 brought further success with the hardball team winning the Surridge Hardball County Championship for the second year running in a thrilling final against Lancashire. The incrediball squad was now demonstrating its development, just missing out on the semi-finals, coming third in the Northern League. Still more success came when the six a side squad won the Indoor County Tournament very comfortably and without losing a wicket. During the winter Chris Edwards played four test matches against Australia's disabled squad and was made Man of the Match twice and was awarded the ECB Disabled Player of the Year.
The Surridge Hardball County Championship was retained in 2010 and again the incrediball team just missed out on a semi-final place. This success was added to by winning the 2010 six a side Indoor County Championship with a young team.
2011 once again saw the hardball team reach the final of the Surridge Hardball County Championship, losing to Lancashire. Sadly there was no indoor competition because there was no sponsorship for it. On the plus side our own sponsorship targets were met despite the uncertain economic climate. Our thanks goes to our sponsors who have ensured the continuation of this club. Chris Edwards and Mark O'Brian both went to South Africa for the triangular series that included Australia. The England team won the final with Chris Edwards named Man of the Match in this and two other matches.
